2013 Busby

It’s not often you find an accomplished artist right here in your own community. Much less one that attends the same church and lives just down the road.

Last night I attended my second (ever) art showing and decided it was time to let everyone in our community in on this hidden talent already known by many in major cities. James Busby and his wife (Karen) live here in Chapin and have two daughters and a son. I went to college with Karen but got a chance to meet James a few years ago. While James’ work takes him to New York, Miami, France and other locales, he and Karen chose Chapin to raise their family. Odds are many around here have not heard of James before; but the art world sure has! He keeps his studio just down the road off US 76 in Chapin.

James Busby received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Virginia Commonwealth University.

He has exhibited his works in solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries including: Kravets|Wehby Gallery, NY; Stux Gallery, NY; The Chelsea Art Museum, NY; The Armory Show, NY; Scope New York; Untitled Art Fair, Miami, FL; Randall Scott Projects, D.C.; University of Richmond Museum, Virginia; New Gallery, TX; Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard, Paris, France; he was also included in the exhibition More Young Americans in Paris curated by Susanne Van Haagen.

Busby recently won the 701 CCA Prize in Columbia SC. His work has received accolades from publications such as, The Washington Post, ARTFORUM, Sculpture Magazine, ArtPapers, and The New York Optimist.

In March 2014, Busby’s work will be featured in “A.M.”, After Modernism, at the Nassau Count Museum of Art on Long Island, NY this Spring.

His next solo exhibition at Kravets|Wehby Gallery in New York opens January 9, 2014.

I know James will have another great showing this week and I look forward to seeing more of his work in the months and years ahead!
