Every summer without fail, they come back!
Hundreds of thousands of purple martins descend on Bomb Island right here on Lake Murray, forming the largest known purple martin roost in all of North America. At dusk, the sky fills so completely that local weather forecasters have reported the flock showing up on radar larger than Hurricane Hugo.
Here’s how you don’t miss it:
🪶 You can experience this late June through early August
🪶 It’s peak is mid-to-late July
🪶 Best viewing times daily: Dawn (5:30–7:00am) and dusk (7:00–9:15pm in mid-July)
🪶 The birds funnel in starting about 30–45 minutes before sunset and continue flying in until dark
It only happens consistently at a few locations in North America – and this is one of them. Come see for yourself.
