COLUMBIA, S.C. — It was a late night at Memorial Stadium as the boys and girls soccer teams from Chapin and Eastside squared off in a pair of matches for the 5A Division II state championship.

In the girls game, a scheduled 4:00 p.m. start time evaporated with two overtime matches and a three-hour rain delay which combined pushed the start time for the Chapin-Eastside match back roughly four hours.

But the delay did not delay Chapin’s run to the title as the Eagles defeated Eastside 4-0 to earn its first state championship since 2016.

In the boys game, Chapin and Eastside were tied at 1-1 at halftime and that score held through four overtimes. This match was decided by penalty kicks with Eastside winning 3-2 to secure the championship in a match that ended at 1:39 a.m. Sunday morning.

The lights at Memorial Stadium were scheduled to be turn off automatically at 2:00 a.m. which gave Eastside just enough time for pictures on the field.
