For the past few weeks, I’ve received several calls, emails, facebook messages, etc about safety concerns around Oak Pointe Elementary School. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I will continue to work towards a resolution for our community. Below is a correspondence I received from the SC Department of Transportation after constituents brought their concerns to me. Please keep me posted as I expect to see improvement soon.

My staff has completed a review regarding Hollingshed Road at River Bottom Road near Oak Pointe Elementary School. The review was conducted to determine if a traffic signal could be installed or if other improvements could be implemented at this intersection to improve safety.

Our review revealed that Hollingshed Road is a two lane rural secondary roadway with a left and right turn lane at the intersection of River Bottom Road. Hollingshead Road has a posted speed limit of 45 mph in this area. It was noted that most of the traffic during the school take-in and dismissal is school related traffic. There were no major backups or delays for motorists entering the intersection.

The study revealed that traffic volumes fall below the minimum requirements needed for signal control, however, additional signage and pavement markings are recommended. To provide better delineation of the yield condition on the northbound right turn, a yield bar will be marked on the pavement and a yield ahead warning sign will be installed on Hollingshed Road in advance of River Bottom Road. This work will be performed by our maintenance forces as soon as their schedule permits.

Thank you again for your interest in this matter. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
