Four years ago I was honored to have several students from “Alive at 25” join me on the Irmo Okra Strut parade route. Getting to know the kids and more about the program, I decided it was a worthy cause I could contribute to (I returned my legislative salary from 2006 through 2011) and so I sponsored the very first Alive at 25 class at Irmo High.
Sadly, that first class was the last class….until this upcoming school year!
Alive at 25 is an early intervention program developed by the National Safety Council to prevent traffic violations, collisions, and fatalities. It is a 4 ½ hour defensive driving course that addresses the dangers of speeding, failure to use seat belts, using cell phones while driving, eating while driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and more. It focuses on the behaviors that young drivers exhibit behind the wheel, and allows the student to recognize the consequences of those actions.
Completion of the program will be required for any student that parks on campus beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.
