House sets furlough dates for session
January 8, 2009

With the state facing significant budget cuts, the South Carolina House of Representatives has announced four furlough weeks for the upcoming session.
As many of you know the session begins next Tuesday, January 13th but we will quickly take a break so members who wish to attend the Presidential Inauguration can and then we will take an additional three weeks in March and April.
January 19 – 23
March 16-20
April 6-10
April 13-17

Got something to say?

Will legislators still get paid for those weeks, or will it be like a traditional temporary layoff?
It’s my understanding we will not be paid for those weeks. Saves state money; otherwise, it wouldn’t really do any good.

Will the Senate take furloughs too or wil they stay in session?
Chet,
The Senate may take “perfunctory” weeks – which I think is same as “furlough” except I believe they will get paid. Don’t hold me to that though – I just know we aren’t getting paid in House.
