Breaking the law - Homeowner Association style
August 19, 2008

Wow! Talk about embarrasing and humbling.
I opened our mail and saw “Covenant Violation - Landscaping” from the Belfair Homeowners Association. The box that was checked was “Edging”.
Now, I’m the first to admit that I don’t pay much attention to our yard and am so busy that when I get a spare moment I spend it with Karen and the kids but….I went out to check the yard and only noticed we may have FOUR little strands of grass extending over the curb. Talk about a tough crowd. I even used to serve as President years ago.
Now being the tightwad I am, I don’t even own an edger. I often joke (self-deprecation) to Karen that I feel like our neighbor, Steve Pesek, is “dad” because he has all the tools and oftentimes even edges for me.
Rather than complain to the HOA (which everyone usually does), I’ll just accept it as a “constructive criticism” and go clip those four strands tomorrow.
UPDATE: I have been told that over 40 notices were sent out in the neighborhood. Wow! At least I’m not alone.

UPDATE (August 31, 2008): No chance I was gonna go out and BUY an edger ( you know how cheap I am )! Fortunately, my father-in-law had one to spare and today he helped me get “compliant”. Glad that’s over. Would hate for that to come up two years from now during an election! : )

Got something to say?

Might want to remove the photo that shows delapidated house because people may think it is yours.

We have an HOA NAZI over here in Lexington County we’ll loan y’all for a month. This guy’s mess will be cleared right up. And he will be HAPPY about doing it.
(EDITOR’S NOTE): Photo above is not my house. I just found picture off internet. Guys, I’m tight with money but not quite that type. Of course, that truck probably ran better than my old car that I turned in earlier this year.

You are fortunate to have such a helpful father-in-law!
Congressman, with those shorts, I coulda sworn you went to Ole Miss!!!
Maybe the property of that house in the first picture (with pickup truck) will get cleaned up by Hanna.
Come on over to Audubon Oaks. Smile for the HOA camera! We have video surveillance now that the nature trail/criminal expressway effort failed. The video doesn’t work at night and fills up its memory after a couple weeks. So, we’ve paid for a white elephant that missed its chance to help with a couple recent Loss From Vehicle crimes.
The picture at top is close to a couple rental homes we have here. Yeah, I can agree with our crackdown on parking on lawns. But crackdowns on inevitable bare spots in lawns growing in clay and the “four strands of grass” is simply harassment. Property values are going down across the board thanks to national-level issues. “Lawn patrols” and HOA pettiness are forcing people to sell and at lower prices.
Way to go HOAs!
